Germany’s Klabautamann have managed to not only employ the paramount conventions of black metal in their newest album, Merkur, such as blast and gallop beats, tremolo picking, screeching vocals, misanthropic themes, paganism, sound effects of the elements, etc., but they manage to impress the template without tearing it asunder, as they integrate progressive- and post-rock conventions into their song compositions, which makes for a uniquely satisfying experience in its productive tension between predictability and unpredictability. Merkur is highly recommended for fans of both standard black metal and left-of-center black metal—which is a type that is unafraid to take risks without forsaking the DNA of what makes the genre so appealing to its adherents in the first place.
