Few acts have compromised their artistic vision
as little as Beyond Dawn and few artists have been
as unafraid to take bold steps in new directions without
regard for musical convention or any degree of commercial
success. Ironic then, that their latest album ‘Frysh’
was their most
accessible to date with a dominating presence of electronic
elements outlining their euphorically dystopian pop/rock
eclectica. Even more surprising was the fact that
a lot of people who one would never have guessed would,
warmed to the album, whilst the unsuspecting chart
embracing hordes remained oblivious to the Norwegian
fourpiece. Maybe that’s just how we like it,
keeping Beyond Dawn to ourselves, sniggering behind
the backs of all the so-called music connoiseurs that
will probably never discover this decade-and-a-half-old
source of challenging, atmospheric and damn-near unclassifiable
music that the band themselves simply call pop music.
In honour of the few people out there who have actually
managed to look past the cross-dressing buffoonery,
the weird big-headed horseback-riding men and the
many other obstacles placed in their path, and discovered
the actual music within, and also as a friendly gesture
to the norwegian
electronica-scene, Beyond Dawn are proud to present
an exclusive set of remixes, interpretations, adaptations
and desecrations of ‘Frysh’-material in
the shape of this double lp. Its title, ‘We’re
Down With Species Of Any Kind’ reflects the
openmindedness and comradery Beyond Dawn share with
their music-obsessed likeminded. A celebration of
Beyond Dawns 15 years in the underground, and an example
of just how vivid, imaginative and diverse the contributing
artists are, ‘We’re Down With Species
Of Any Kind’ is a feast to the electronically-inclined
ear as well as anyone else who doesn’t pay too
much attention to genres but is in it for the music,
as are we, and Beyond Dawn. Skål!
